Hard To Fit Contacts vs Regular Contacts

Hard To Fit Contacts vs. Regular Contacts

Most people tend to prefer contact lenses to glasses, but not everyone can wear contact lenses. Happily, more people can wear contact lenses now, thanks to improvements in technology that make even hard-to-fit patients candidates for contacts. Our team at West Village Eyecare in New York would like to take a closer look at hard-to-fit contacts and regular contact lenses.

What Kind Of Contacts Are Considered Regular Contacts?

Regular contacts are usually considered to be regular soft lenses. Most individuals can wear regular contacts, which can come in one of several types. Daily lenses are literally thrown away at the end of the day, and you can also purchase lenses that last a week or a month. Traditional regular contacts last longer but may need to be cleaned every day.

Hard-To-Fit Lenses

Some people have eye conditions that make it difficult, but not impossible, to wear contact lenses. Here are the most common kinds of hard-to-fit lenses:

•             Rigid gas-permeable lenses are the most common of the hard-to-fit lenses. Rigid gas-permeable lenses allow oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye. People with dry eye syndrome, keratoconus, and some other conditions may be good candidates for rigid gas-permeable lenses.

•             Daily lenses may also be a good fit for patients with dry eye syndrome.

•             Scleral lenses rest on the white part of your eye and are custom-fit. Patients with keratoconus or dry eye syndrome may be able to use scleral lenses comfortably.

•             You may be able to use toric lenses if you have astigmatism or if your eye is misshapen.

•             Presbyopia is a condition that can happen when you get older, as your lens can no longer focus light correctly on the retina, making it harder to see things up close. Individuals with presbyopia may be able to use multifocal lenses.

If multifocal lenses don't work for individuals with presbyopia, they might be able to wear monovision contact lenses.
